PM Carney Appoints Conservative MP to Senate

Prime Minister Mark Carney appointed Quebec MP Richard Martel to the Senate on Tuesday. Martel was a Conservative but will sit as an independent—not tied to any party. He resigned from Parliament immediately. This is the fifth Conservative to leave the party caucus this term. Senators are appointed, not elected, so Martel no longer faces voters.
