Canada Awards Submarine Contract to German ThyssenKrupp over South Korea

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced July 6 that Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems won Canada's submarine competition, defeating South Korea's Hanwha Ocean. The $20-30 billion contract covers up to 12 diesel-electric patrol submarines, with operations and maintenance costs adding another $40-50 billion. ThyssenKrupp partnered with Norway, a NATO ally; Hanwha competed alone. South Korea is not NATO-aligned. Carney called it Canada's largest procurement.
