China Establishes Permanent Coast Guard Presence East of Taiwan

China's Coast Guard announced July 4 it would maintain standing patrols east of Taiwan, replacing rotating task forces. The shift institutionalizes Beijing's presence in waters forming Taiwan's main maritime approaches. The U.S., Britain, France, and Germany have objected. Taiwan's government rejected the patrols' legitimacy and instructed civilian vessels to disregard boarding demands from Chinese ships.
