China Moves to Keep Ships Permanently Off Taiwan's Coast

China's coast guard announced July 4 it would keep patrol ships permanently stationed east of Taiwan instead of rotating them in and out. The move makes official what Beijing wants—a constant presence near Taiwan's shipping lanes. The U.S., Britain, France, and Germany objected. Taiwan told its own ships to ignore orders from Chinese vessels to stop and board.
