NZ First pushes to limit voting to citizens only

Winston Peters announced on 5 July that NZ First would campaign to restrict voting rights to New Zealand citizens. Currently, permanent residents and people on work or study visas who have lived here at least a year can vote. Peters distinguishes citizenship—a formal commitment to the nation—from permanent residence. Changing the law would require amending electoral law and could face challenges under the Bill of Rights Act.
