NZ First wants to stop non-citizens voting

Winston Peters announced on 5 July that NZ First would push to let only New Zealand citizens vote. Right now, permanent residents and people on work or study visas who have lived here a year or longer can vote. Peters says citizenship is a deeper commitment to the country than having permanent residence. Changing this would need new laws, and some argue it could break New Zealand's rights protections.
