Auckland's recovery office closes after $2 billion rebuild
Auckland's Tāmaki Makaurau Recovery Office has wound up in June 2026, ending a three-year Crown-council partnership worth $2 billion to rebuild after the 2023 floods and Cyclone Gabrielle. The office had coordinated infrastructure repairs, managed voluntary buyouts in high-risk areas, and supported communities. Its responsibilities now return to the council's core operations.
