Glasgow Council Deal Averts Fire-and-Rehire for 23,000 Staff

Glasgow City Council and the union Unison agreed on 5 October 2026 to avoid firing and rehiring 23,000 non-teaching staff. The clash was over a new pay and grading structure designed to settle historic equal pay claims. The council had warned all 23,000 they could be dismissed and rehired, many on poorer terms.
