
Labour drops judge-only trial plan to ease court backlog
Labour on October 4, 2026 dropped most plans to limit jury trials in England and Wales. It scrapped the idea of judge-only trials — where no jury decides guilt — for offences likely to bring under three years in prison. The aim had been to clear the Crown Court's 80,000-case backlog.
