Pope Leo XIV told artists Oct. 2 it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. He pointed to an ontological difference — a difference in what art fundamentally is, not how it looks — calling AI output statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms, he said, lack the spark of humanity.
