California Sets 18 as Minimum Age for Marriage

California will require people to be 18 to marry starting Jan. 1, after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 1267 on Sept. 30, 2026. It ends a system with no minimum age that let minors marry with a parent's permission and a judge's approval. Newsom called it a "long overdue measure to protect young Californians and minors."
