Police Apology Opens Inquest Into John Makai's Death in Custody

Victoria Police apologised to the family of John Makai, 58, father of 10, who died of serious head injuries in custody in 2023. Lawyer Andrew Imrie delivered the apology for Chief Commissioner Mike Bush as the Victorian coroner's inquest — an inquiry into the death — opened 28 September 2026 with first-day footage. Its findings could change custody procedures.
