Obama Center Keeps Private Control, Breaks Library Tradition

The Obama Presidential Center opened to the public June 19 in Chicago under an unusual structure. Rather than transfer the campus to the federal government and National Archives like past presidential libraries, the Obama Foundation retained nonprofit ownership. Official records are stored digitally through a separate agreement with NARA. Historians and transparency advocates questioned the decision during planning, though the foundation said public access to archives would be maintained.
