Three Sahel States Leave ECOWAS for Own Alliance

Three Sahel countries — Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger — formally left ECOWAS, West Africa's regional bloc, on January 29, 2025. They are deepening ties through their own group, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Diplomats, including the UN, must now work with both ECOWAS and AES capitals.
