37 suspected miners found dead in Minna custody after raids

37 suspected illegal gold miners were found dead Thursday in Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps cells in Minna, Niger state, after Sept. 15-16 raids west of the city. Survivors described packed, airless cells. The Corps, a paramilitary agency, first blamed disease, but a preliminary report pointed to suffocation. President Tinubu ordered an investigation; the state commander was suspended.
