37 suspected illegal miners found dead in Nigerian paramilitary custody in Minna

37 suspected illegal gold miners were found dead Thursday in cells of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Minna, Niger state, after Sept. 15-16 raids west of the city. Survivors described overcrowding with no ventilation. The corps initially cited disease; a preliminary report pointed to suffocation. President Tinubu ordered a probe; the state commander was suspended.
