Labor to reopen detention for visa overstayers
Tony Burke says Labor will reopen detention centres for visa overstayers. The Home Affairs Minister announced 17 September 100 compliance officers — staff who chase visa breaches — plus 250 freed beds and a possible 100-bed quarantine facility in Victoria. It targets around 77,000 unlawful non-citizens, held for weeks to encourage them to leave. He calls it pre-2015 practice.
