EU Offers Canada First-Ever Associate Membership

The European Commission proposed Canada as the EU's first associate member, a status short of full membership. Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed it 17 September in Strasbourg, urging the European Parliament toward deep cooperation and an 'alliance for the future.' He said polls show overwhelming Canadian support for closer ties. He will host EU leaders in Montreal 29-30 October.
