EU Proposes Canada as First Associate Member

European Commission proposed Canada become EU's first associate member. Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the proposal 17 September in Strasbourg, addressing the European Parliament to urge deep cooperation and an "alliance for the future." He said polling showed overwhelming Canadian support for closer European ties. He will host EU leaders in Montreal 29-30 October.
