Lechner & Lechner clads Austrian annexe in charred timber

Lechner & Lechner Architects has wrapped Quiet Retreat, its annexe in Salzkammergut, Austria, in blackened timber, according to project details published on 17 September 2026. The finish uses Shou Sugi Ban, a Japanese charring technique protecting wood from weather and insects without paint, linked by the architects to traditional black Alpine barns.
