Japan passes 100,000 centenarians for first time

Japan now has 107,677 residents aged 100 or older, passing 100,000 for the first time, figures published Sept. 16 show. The count includes everyone who has reached their 100th birthday. As more people survive to extreme ages, long-term care — daily help for older adults — and pension planning face growing pressure.
