Amnesty Presses Algeria to Drop Plan to Resume Executions

Amnesty International on Sept. 15 urged Algeria to drop plans to expand the death penalty and restart executions. The appeal came after President Tebboune ordered wildfire arson — deliberately setting fires — be made punishable by death. Algeria has carried out no executions since 1993, though courts still hand down death sentences, routinely changed to life terms.
