Why Amnesty Is Asking Algeria Not to Restart Executions

Amnesty International on Sept. 15 asked Algeria not to restart executions or expand crimes punished by death. The request followed President Tebboune's order to make deliberately starting wildfires punishable by death. Algeria has put no one to death since 1993, though judges still hand down death sentences that are later switched to life in prison.
