Beneficiaries left with $251 a week after housing, MSD says

People on benefits have $251 a week left on average after paying for housing, according to a Ministry of Social Development report reported by RNZ. Adjusted for inflation, that is down from $262 in 2024. Rent or mortgage payments took 48% of income on average. Average income before housing costs was $486 a week.
