Smithsonian's Lonnie Bunch III to Step Down in 2026

Lonnie G. Bunch III, the first African American secretary (chief executive) of the Smithsonian, will retire at the end of 2026. He founded the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bunch cited personal reasons and told the Washington Post that Trump administration pressure on the Smithsonian's historical exhibits did not drive his decision.
