Former javelin thrower Gobena shatters Sydney Marathon course record in 2:04:42

Addisu Gobena, a 21-year-old Ethiopian who was a javelin thrower until 2023, won the 2026 Sydney Marathon on 30 August in 2:04:42, lowering Hailemaryam Kiros's 2025 course record of 2:06:06 by 84 seconds. He broke away with Chimdessa Debele Gudeta inside the final two kilometres and won by four seconds. The top seven men all finished inside the old record.
