Abdullah Ibrahim, Jazz Pioneer Who Defied Apartheid, Dead at 91

Abdullah Ibrahim, the Cape Town pianist who merged his homeland's District Six sounds with modern jazz, died June 15 in Germany. His seven-decade career showed how exile transformed African artists into cultural ambassadors—taking local music into the world, absorbing new influences, then bringing it back home transformed. His 1974 hit *Manenberg* became an anti-apartheid anthem.
