A 2013 prediction about JavaScript's future has quietly come true

Technologist Gary Bernhardt forecast in 2013 that portable bytecode—lower-level code that runs across platforms—would eventually handle performance-critical tasks, while JavaScript remained the user-facing layer. WebAssembly, formalized in 2019, has followed exactly that path. Figma's rendering engine and Cloudflare Workers now depend on it.
