Race Across the World contestant Jo Gardiner dies at 61, a year after son Sam's fatal crash
Jo Gardiner, the Manchester physiotherapist who competed with her son Sam on BBC's Race Across the World (2020), has died at 61 after what her family called "a long and courageous battle with cancer." Her death follows that of Sam, 24, killed in a car crash on the A34 near Manchester roughly a year ago. An inquest found insufficient tyre tread contributed to the collision. Gardiner had type 1 diabetes and was a Diabetes UK ambassador. Her family set up a JustGiving page directing donations to Diabetes UK. She is survived by her other son, Charlie.
