Oman races to contain 400-sq-km oil spill near marine reserve

Oman's Environment Authority reported on August 10 that a near-400-square-kilometre oil slick from the stricken tanker Caroline Bezengi is within 7 km of Oman's southern coast. The spill is concentrated around the Hallaniyat archipelago, home to a marine reserve created last year. The sanctioned vessel is believed to carry roughly one million barrels of crude.
