Hungary's New Leaders Pick a Judge Orban Once Forced Out for President

Hungary's new ruling party, Tisza, nominated András Baka, 73, for president on August 8, 2026. Baka, once Hungary's top judge, was removed in 2012 after criticizing legal changes under then-leader Viktor Orban. A European court later called that removal illegal. Tisza, which ended Orban's 16 years in power in April, expects parliament to approve Baka Tuesday. Orban's party, now out of power, will boycott the vote.
