Hungary's Tisza Party Nominates Former Supreme Court Chief Baka, Ousted by Orban, for Presidency

Hungary's governing Tisza party nominated András Baka, 73, for the presidency on August 8, 2026. Baka, a former Supreme Court chief and European Court of Human Rights judge, was removed from his post in 2012 after criticizing Orban-era judicial reforms — a dismissal the ECHR later ruled violated his rights. Parliament, where Tisza holds a constitutional majority after ending Orban's 16-year rule in April, is expected to confirm him on Tuesday. Fidesz, now in opposition, said it will boycott the vote, calling Baka a "puppet of the Tisza majority."
