Record number arrested for working illegally in the UK

The Home Office said over 17,000 people were arrested for working without permission since July 2024 — up 122% on the two years before. Officials carried out 7,270 workplace raids in early 2026 alone. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said enforcement is at its highest level ever. Employers face £74m in fines this year.
