Second Death in Eight Months at a New Jersey Immigrant Detention Center

Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, 41, died August 1, 2026, after a medical emergency at Delaney Hall, a privately run jail in Newark, New Jersey, that holds people for U.S. immigration authorities. His family says he was denied medication for diabetes and seizures; the agency says he received proper care. No cause of death has been determined. This is the second death there in eight months.
