English regional mayors to get a share of income tax money from 2028

On July 31, 2026, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that English regional mayors will receive a share of income tax from 2028 and local business taxes from April 2027, instead of money handed down by the central government. Mayors will also gain power to borrow money and oversee housing and transport. The government calls it "the biggest transfer of power from Westminster in a generation." Details come in the autumn 2026 budget.
