Government picks smaller army training upgrade as combat readiness sits at 45 percent

Cabinet papers show the Government chose a basic upgrade for army recruit training over a bigger plan. Budget 2026 set aside $23 million for design work through to 2029-30, focused on Waiouru camp. Only 45 percent of the army's combat forces are ready to fight, and 60 percent of training equipment is worn out.
