PJM, the power grid operator for 67 million people from Virginia to Illinois, will shut off electricity to large data centers during power shortages starting June 2027. Affected facilities may get just 30 minutes' notice, with compensation provided. Wholesale electricity prices on PJM's grid nearly doubled over the past year as data center demand has surged.
