Former Taupō mayor David Trewavas dies suddenly

David Trewavas, who was mayor of Taupō for 13 years until 2025, died suddenly on 28 July 2026, aged 63. He served on the local council for 24 years in total. He lost the mayor's job to John Funnell in last year's local elections. Funnell called him a people person who genuinely cared about others. The council sent condolences to his whānau, or family.
