Wildfires Across Europe Have Burned More Land Than Usual

Wildfires in Spain, France, and Italy killed three firefighters and forced thousands to leave their homes by July 23, 2026. Fires are burning in southwestern France, central Spain, and Sicily. Europe has lost more land to fire this year than its yearly average over the past twenty years, with high fire-risk conditions stretching from France into Portugal and the British Isles.
