Three Firefighters Dead as European Wildfires Burn More Land Than 20-Year Average

Wildfires across Spain, France, and Italy killed three firefighters and forced thousands of evacuations as of July 23, 2026. Fires are active in southwestern France, central Spain, and Sicily. Europe has burned more land in 2026 than the annual average over the past two decades, with very extreme fire danger extending from France into Portugal and the British Isles.
