Burnham to Become UK Prime Minister Monday Without a New Election

Andy Burnham won the Labour Party leadership on 17 July 2026 and will be asked by King Charles III to become prime minister on Monday 20 July. Since Labour already holds the most seats in Parliament, the rules send the party's leader straight to the top job — no national vote needed. Burnham, an MP for Makerfield, won at least 379 electoral college votes.
