Freely available AI models are catching up to paid ones, new report finds

Mozilla's first open-source AI report, published July 14, 2026, finds the top freely available AI model scored 54 on a key test — up from 22 a year earlier. The best paid model scored 60. Routing data shows free models now handle about a third of all traffic, processing massive amounts of text weekly.
