Open AI models close the gap: benchmark score jumps from 22 to 54 in a year, trailing closed models at 60

Mozilla's inaugural "State of Open Source AI" report, published July 14, 2026, finds the leading open-weight model scored 54 on a key benchmark in spring 2026, up from 22 a year earlier. The top closed model scored 60. OpenRouter data shows open models now account for roughly a third of platform traffic, with 25 trillion tokens processed weekly.
