UN calls for investigation into 31 deaths in Kashmir protests

The UN's top rights official, Volker Turk, wants an independent investigation into clashes that killed at least 31 people in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir since June 2026. He urged Pakistan's government to talk with protesters rather than crack down before local elections in late July. The UN warned that banning a protest group, JAAC, could make peaceful demonstrations illegal.
