UN demands independent probe into 31 deaths in Pakistan-administered Kashmir unrest

UN Human Rights chief Volker Turk called for an independent investigation into clashes that killed at least 31 people in Pakistan-administered Kashmir since June 2026. Turk urged Islamabad to pursue "meaningful and inclusive political dialogue" over security-led measures, ahead of regional elections scheduled for late July. The UN also warned that Pakistan's proscription of protest group JAAC could criminalize peaceful assembly.
