England's local councils: 134 to become 38 in big shake-up

The government will replace 134 English councils with 38 larger ones, so each area has a single council instead of two. Communities Secretary Steve Reed said this would cut waste and improve services. Elections are due next May, with the new councils running by April 2028. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own councils separately.
