Uganda Stopped an Ebola Outbreak Without a Vaccine — and With Few Deaths

Uganda's Ebola outbreak infected 20 people and killed only two — a death rate under 10%, among the lowest ever. No approved vaccine existed for this strain. Health workers contained it by isolating patients, tracking anyone they had contact with, and watching borders. Oxford has since started the first small trial of a possible vaccine. The last patient recovered on July 16, 2026.
