Uganda Contained Ebola With Under 10% Fatality — and No Vaccine

Uganda's Ebola outbreak infected 20 people and killed two — a case fatality rate under 10%, among the lowest recorded. No licensed vaccine exists for the Bundibugyo strain. Containment relied entirely on isolation, contact tracing, and cross-border surveillance. Oxford has since launched the first Phase I trial of a Bundibugyo vaccine candidate, BD-Ebov. The last patient was discharged on July 16, 2026.
