Australia promises to defend Fiji as China tests nuclear weapons nearby

Prime Minister Albanese signed a deal with Fiji on 6 July promising Australia will back Fiji militarily if it's attacked. The deal came the same week China tested a new nuclear weapon from a submarine in the South Pacific. It's Australia's strongest promise to protect a Pacific neighbour outside our formal alliance with the US and New Zealand.
