Australia gives Fiji an explicit security guarantee as China tests nuclear missiles in the Pacific

Prime Minister Albanese signed a defence alliance with Fiji on 6 July committing Australia to full support for Fiji's sovereignty if attacked. The pact came the same week China tested a nuclear-capable submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile in the South Pacific. It marks the closest Australia has come to a formal security guarantee for a Pacific partner outside ANZUS, signalling a shift in regional strategy.
